A number of years ago we did a camping trip out to Newfoundland. It’s an incredible place and I highly recommend it, but not for tenting as we spent so many miserable nights freezing in the rain! Gros Morne National Park is very scenic though, with a wide variety of landscapes.
We saw some moose. Actually Wayne are some moose pie, too.
Another highlight for us was a trip up to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of L’Anse aux Meadows, an archeological site of a Viking Settlement. It dates back to around the year 1000 and there is a recreated Viking base camp.
James was 6 at the time and enjoyed being a Viking in the sod building. Plus it was welcome relief to be out of the cold, wind and rain.
I was reminded of this trip when Perlen sent me some beads from their Beauty Beads Viking Collection. Below left is Kåre, the man who fights for his family and home. In the middle are the children, twins Tjalfe and Røskva. On the right is Freya, the lady who according to the website, ‘partook in fighting while also taking care of her children’. The beads are about $32 USD each. I say about, because the currency rate of exchange fluctuates. If you are unfamiliar with Perlen and are checking out the website for the first time, you have to make an account and log in to see the prices without the VAT, if you live outside the EU. Then, just change the currency to your county on the top of the page.
Check out the detail of his cloak and sword. In his other hand he’s holding a hatchet.
The beads have a large core so they will fit on most bracelet systems, but here I’ve used Perlen’s own leather bracelet called Beauty String that I did a blog on here. I like the boots that they are wearing!
Thinking of the Vikings in Canada made me want to use the Ohm Beads Fireball and Waterfall. The water is what brought them here and fire helped to keep them alive! I added in the Ohm Beads Spacers Chained and Mech Tech.
Here I went with the warm tones of Bar Brawl and Mulled Cider. I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at the wilds of Newfoundland and the Viking family! If you are a Game of Thrones fan they might be fun to wear. We hope to go to Iceland next summer so I’ll be sure to take one of the clan with me!
Disclosure: For this blog I may receive some items as promotional samples.
I really love your travel pictures, Martha! Newfoundland and that Eastern part of Canada is someplace I really hope to visit – it looks so dramatically beautiful! I had a look at these Viking beads and just ordered the Viking ship as a remembrance of a family trip to Norway. I had been waiting for one cored lengthwise like the beauty beads one.

Hi Elise! What a great reminder that will be of your trip! Newfoundland is a great place if you’re not camping, for sure, LOL! The day we were at the Viking settlement we kept on thinking how they must have felt all those years ago, arriving in a new land in perhaps bad weather. We are too used to our creature comforts!

Oh no , Martha! Now I want to make a Viking bracelet….and I want the Beauty String to put it on. I love your photos…Newfoundland looks incredible. I’m not sure if I will ever get there but if I do it will not be in a tent!!! I lived in Maine for five years and never saw a single moose so you’re lucky. I’m not sure if you have been to Iceland before, but my friends went for their wedding anniversary this year and they loved it.

The Beauty String is perfect for Ohm Beads too-I’m not sure if you collect them but I’m thinking yes. There are a LOT of moose in Newfoundland and you actually have to be careful driving as people will die when their car hits them. My husband and son went to Iceland a few years ago (I took the other son to Disney World) so this will be just for a couple of days. I can’t wait!

Martha. I just wanted to ask you if the beads stay in place on the Beauty String? They look like they would.

They do pretty much but not totally. Be sure to check my post on them if you haven’t already, as Trollbeads don’t necessarily fit on.

I just checked out your post…I think there’s enough beads that do fit it that it’s fine if Trollbeads don’t. The Ohm beads you had on it looked really good. I also noticed on Perlen’s site that there is a beige/black one which I think may be my favorite. Oh well here I go again!

I hear you, Suzanne. The mixed brown ones also look really nice! Say, I just got the new Trollbeads People’s Bead in the mail and you should be able to see a photo of it on my Facebook on here.

This is the bead I really wanted to win!!!! It is absolutely beautiful. Did you happen to involve yourself in the voting? I saw it all the way through but I do hope they change the process next year or I doubt I would do it again.

I actually made it to the end with the voting but it wasn’t easy! I would spend some time each night but didn’t like how I had to choose between two I really didn’t like. I’m happy the bead you wanted to win did win!
